Response to the Tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut

Dear Parents and Staff,

Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire community of Newtown, Connecticut. The tragedy that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School is incomprehensible and horrific. We hold the innocent victims and their loved ones in our hearts during this very sad and difficult time.

Please be assured District 81 has stringent practices and procedures in place to ensure the safety of our children and staff. The District 81 School Emergency Plan is reviewed and updated annually by law enforcement authorities from both the Schiller Park Police and Fire Departments and administrators, who serve on our District Safety Committee. As the lessons of this event emerge, District 81 safety procedures will be reviewed and updated accordingly.

The tragedy in Connecticut will be at the forefront of every communication medium during the days and weeks ahead. In times like these it is helpful to access the guidance of child health experts for advice on how to talk to our children and assure them they are safe. The links below offer insight on how to support your children during this time.

As always, our school psychologists and social workers will be available to speak with your children next week. Please feel free to contact them if you believe your child needs additional support.

In closing, I want to emphasize that the safety of our students and staff is our top priority in District 81. Be assured we will continue to be vigilant with your child’s safety. We ask that you please keep the community of Newton, Connecticut in your thoughts and prayers during this very sad and difficult time.
